When Jan Newman came and spoke to our class, he had one very serious, specific piece of advice that just grabbed me. He held up his mobile phone and said, "If you want to make money in the industry, get into the smart phone business." When an experienced and very successful professional in the industry opens up and shares something from his jar of secrets, it is wise to pay attention. With the amount of growth that smart phones experienced in 2012, we can conclude that the industry is not going anywhere soon. Smart phones provide both development opportunities for professionals already in the field and entry level opportunities for recent graduates hoping to get their foot in the door. With the success of the smart phone industry, I am seriously considering starting my career in this direction. For all CS and other recent technical graduates, I strongly recommend considering this industry as a starting point for a career.
Amen. He said that and I started to debate whether I wanted to work with iOS or android. I really wish BYU offered a mobile class that could give us the fundamentals to make it in this rapidly growing niche.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. There is a huge market for it that we are not being prepared for in our degree. As the market changes there needs to be a change in curriculum, but sadly these changes lag due to the bureaucracy of it all.
DeleteIt's true! I found the article that Apple's apps store hit 25 Billion downloads. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2401122,00.asp
ReplyDeleteIf each app costed $1, Apple could have earned 25 billion. Crazy! Thank you for recommending me to consider the phone industry as my starting point.
